Thanks to the financial support of “The Larry Foundation,” we were able to construct a new well in the village of Shantie Bamba.  This village has about 400 inhabitants and is located in the steppe, northeast of Toubacouta.

Realizing the well was much more difficult than expected.  In fact, we thought we could find water at a depth of 14 meters.  In the end, our digger, with shovel and bucket, had to dig nearly 30 meters deep.  To dig, he had to descend into the well via a rope.  This in itself is life-threatening.  Staying in the deep pit is also very dangerous because of a possible lack of oxygen due to the high ambient temperatures.

At one point, the rope they used to hoist the digger down was too short because it had to descend deeper than 25 meters.  So they lost several days of time because a new cord had to be fetched in Dakar (250 kilometers away).

But finally they reached water, and that makes a world of difference for a village where until now there was no water or electricity available.  From now on they will have permanent access to drinking water, hygiene will improve, they will have water to prepare food, they will be able to grow vegetables and so on.  Thanks again to the sponsorship by Laurens Vanthoor and his “Larry Foundation”.
